Iceland Ring Road
Reykjavík,
Iceland
•
A winter road trip of frozen waterfalls, black beaches, and the northern lights at midnight.
Driving into the wild
Winter in Iceland is not for the faint-hearted — short days, icy roads, and weather that changes by the hour. But it is also when the country feels most alive, with the aurora dancing overhead on clear nights.
We based ourselves near Reykjavík and made long day trips out to waterfalls half-frozen in place. Standing under Skógafoss in the cold, with mist freezing on your jacket, is something I will never forget.
Tips for winter
Rent a 4x4, check the road conditions every morning, and keep your plans flexible. The lights came out on our last night, right when we’d given up hope.
